Man charged with murder over Ipswich river drowning

A man has been charged with murder after a body was found in a river in Ipswich.

Joe Pooley, 22, was found dead in the River Gipping on August 13 2018.

A post-mortem examination found that the young man from the town had drowned.

Sebastian Smith, aged 34 and of no fixed address, has now been charged with murder.

He appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court on Wednesday before being remanded in custody and will appear at Ipswich Crown Court on Friday.

Three others – a 25-year-old woman, a 29-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man – were arrested before being released under investigation.
