A man in his 30s has been stabbed to death in Finsbury Park this evening in what is understood to be the first murder in London in 2020.

A murder investigation has begun after police and ambulance services were called to the scene in north London at approximately 6.50pm on Friday evening.

The man was stabbed in Charteris Road, near the junction with Lennox Road in Finsbury Park. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7.42pm.

Police said no arrests have been made and they are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

The stabbing is understood to be the first in London in 2020. In 2019, 90 people were stabbed to death in London, according to police statistics.

Islington Council leader Richard Watts tweeted: "I'm horrified to hear about this appalling crime" and added: "What an awful start to the New Year."

The Labour councillor said he was in touch with Islington Police and with Islington MP and Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn.
