Armed police respond to incident at a Tesco store in Leicester

A man has been arrested on suspicion of affray following an incident at a Leicester supermarket.

Armed police responded to reports of a man, 37, with a meat cleaver at the store on New Park Street earlier Monday morning.

The Tesco that sits on the corner of Narbourough Road was evacuated while officers dealt with the incident.

Leicestershire Police were called to the premises at 8:35am after being informed that a man with a knife inside the store was threatening others.

The 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody.

No injuries have been reported and the supermarket has been reopened, however police remain at the scene whilst carrying out enquiries.

Officers are also in the area providing residents with reassurance.
