A 15-year-old has been charged with robbery and assault after Katherine Jenkins was mugged as she tried to help an elderly woman.

The opera star was on her way to a rehearsal on Wednesday afternoon when she saw the woman being attacked and tried to intervene.

But when she stepped in to help, she herself was then mugged, her agent said.

A female police officer was assaulted during the incident, but did not require medical treatment.

The Met Police said two 15-year-olds were arrested at the scene at around 3.10pm on King's Road in Chelsea.

They were both released under investigation, and detectives re-arrested the suspect a day later after receiving further information.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear at Highbury Magistrates' Court on January 6, 2020.

The Welsh mezzo-soprano was in London to sing at the Henry van Straubenzee charity carol concert at St Luke's Church in Chelsea.

In a statement, Ms Jenkin's agent said: "Miraculously, Katherine still managed to perform at the concert as she didn't want to let the charity down.

"On her way to rehearsal she witnessed an older lady being viciously mugged and intervened to help.

"As a result of her stepping in, Katherine was then mugged herself.

"However she helped the police identify the perpetrator and the young woman was arrested shortly afterwards."
