MPs and politicians from across the political spectrum have joined together to congratulate Sir Lindsay Hoyle on becoming the new Speaker of the House of Commons.

The Labour MP for Chorley was elected by his fellow MPs to replace John Bercow who stepped down last month after a decade in the chair.

Sir Lindsay was one of seven candidates in the running, and finally received the necessary 50 per cent of votes in the fourth round of the ballot.

Following the vote announcement, Sir Lindsay was dragged to the chair by Tory MP Nigel Evans and Labour's Caroline Flint, as is dictated by Commons tradition.

As he took the position of Speaker, Sir Lindsay paid tribute to his late daughter Natalie, who died in December 2017.

MPs have taken to social media to congratulate the new speaker.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid tweeted that Mr Hoyle will "be great" in the role.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle's fellow candidate for the chair, Dame Eleanor Laing, also tweeted her congratulations.

Meg Hillier, who also ran for the position, said he had a "strong victory".

Labour members praised Mr Hoyle, who has served as a Labour MP for the last nine years.

Conservative MPs also showed their support for Mr Hoyle.
