A man has been arrested and charged with murder after the body of a 12-year old girl was located five miles from the Love Island villa in Cape Town.

News 24 reported that the man who was arrested was supposed to appear on a murder charge in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court in South Africa on Friday, but would now make his first appearance on Monday.

Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa told the Cape Times: "A post-mortem will soon be conducted to determine how she [the schoolgirl] died and whether any more charges could be added."

The ITV2 Love Island series has transferred to the South Africa city for the winter, with the new series due to launch on Sunday 12th January.

There have been reports that the new Love Island villa will be patrolled by armed guards to ensure the stars' safety.

A Love Island spokesman told MailOnline: "The safety and security of our Islanders and crew are of the utmost importance." 

The exact location of the Love Island villa in Cape Town is said to be secret to protect staff and contenders.

The Sun reported that a "rampant" gang war in Cape Town saw a security boss shot dead this week.

The Foreign Office says on its website that there is a high level of crime including rape and murder in South Africa.

South Africa's high crime and murder rate is said to make it one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

The Love Island summer series takes place in Majorca, and it is the first time a winter series is being launched in South Africa.

Laura Whitmore will make her debut as the show's host, replacing Caroline Flack who has been charged with assault.
