A British Islamic State suspect charged with preparing terrorist acts has appeared in court.

Mamun Rashid, 26, from east London, spoke only to confirm his name, address, date of birth and nationality as he stood in the dock at Westminster Magistrates Court on Monday.

He will be held in police custody ahead of another hearing at the Old Bailey in December.

The 26-year-old was arrested at Heathrow Airport last week after stepping off an inbound flight from Turkey.

It came after Turkey said it had deported a British Islamic State suspect.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police said Rashid's arrest was "Syria-related", and later confirmed he had been charged with preparation of terrorist acts.
