The President has announced that hostage negotiator Robert O'Brien will replace John Bolton as White House National Security Advisor.

US president Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will be making Robert O'Brien the new National Security Advisor.

O'Brien currently serves as the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs at the State Department.

He has a long history in Republican and Democratic foreign policy circles, having served under the George W Bush and Barack Obama administrations.

Trump took to Twitter to praise his new appointee, with whom he has worked to try to free Americans held overseas.

He will be the fourth national security adviser, replacing John Bolton after he and Trump "strongly disagreed" on a number of issues.
