A 24-year-old man was knifed to death and another man is in serious condition after an attack at a south London Tube station.

Police have launched a murder investigation after the victim was fatally stabbed on Sunday night.

The 24-year-old, who is yet to be named, was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead this morning whilst the 25-year-old remains in a serious condition.

British Transport Police were called to the scene at about 23:30 where officers arrested two men on suspicion of violent disorder and they are now being questioned in custody.

Officers believe the incident was a result of a fight between two groups of men and said they were treating the death as a murder.

Elephant and Castle resident Keylin Tejeda, 32, said she knew one of the victims as they were a regular customer at her shop El Monte.

She said: "I was coming from a restaurant with my partner around 11 and when we were passing by we saw him lying down. I could see who he was, I saw him.

"The ambulance (team) were operating on him on the floor."

Police have today stepped up their presence in the area and are on "reassurance patrols" in and around the tube station to ensure commuters feel safe.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn said: “This was a shocking act of violence and we are working tirelessly to identify and trace those responsible.

“While the investigation is still at an early stage, at this time we believe there was an altercation between two groups of men inside the Underground station and it is here the victims sustained their injuries before making their way onto the street.

“I would urge anyone who hasn’t already spoken with police to get in touch with us as soon as possible by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 597 of 01/09/19. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Transport for London confirmed that both the station and local bus stops are now fully open and functioning at normal capacity.
