Nottingham high street has been cordoned off as police negotiate with a man 'holding a baby' during a domestic abuse incident in a Costa Coffee.

Emergency services were called to Friar Lane at 12:20pm following reports of a 'domestic incident.'

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed to LBC News that the incident was still ongoing at just after 5pm.

Six police are negotiating with a man "holding the child" in the coffee shop.

Customers have been evacuated, and around 100 people are gathered outside the shop.

Four police cars, two incident response vehicles and an ambulance are currently at the scene.

Nikita Riley, who works on the street, told Nottinghamshire Live: "I was in the break room and one of my colleagues said a child was being held hostage.

"It's a bit intimidating seeing all these police and ambulances about. It's a bit of a shock."

Another witness told the BBC: "He is talking to about five officers with other officers further back. The man is talking calmly.

"It is clear a negotiation is going on to release the child. The child doesn't seem distressed. Paramedics are outside."

A police statement said: "A police cordon is in place in Costa in Friar Lane, Nottingham after a report of a domestic incident was made to Nottinghamshire Police at 12.20pm today.

"Officers were quickly on the scene of this incident and we would like to thank the public for their patience.

"We would like to reassure people that there is no risk to the wider public and that we are doing everything we can to bring this incident to a peaceful conclusion."
