US President Donald Trump has said he sympathises with Meghan Markle over press coverage of her life, but that she has taken the media interest in her "all too personally" in a world exclusive interview on LBC.

Speaking to LBC's Nigel Farage, the US President said he thought Prince Harry is a "really fine young man", but added he could sympathise with Meghan over what she has claimed is "unfair" press coverage.

Asked if he felt sorry for Meghan, he said: "Well I've been watching her interviews and I've seen it and she's taken it very personally, I guess you have to be a little bit different than that but she takes it very, very personally and I can understand it.

"I don't know her, I will say I've met Harry and he's great I met him when I was over, we had something that was so incredible recently, that was five months ago now how time flies.

"I got to meet Harry and he is really a fine young man the whole family is i think the whole family is terrific."

When Mr Trump visited the UK in June, the US President did not meet Meghan as she was on maternity leave after welcoming her son Archie into the world.

She and Harry have received criticism in recent months over their decision to repeatedly use private jets to travel while campaigning for greater care of the environment.

During their recent trip to South Africa Meghan and Harry announced they were launching legal proceedings against the owners of The Sun, The Mirror and the Mail on Sunday over allegations of harassment and phone hacking.

Harry had previously condemned the "ruthless campaign" against Meghan, saying: "I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces."

Mr Trump also told Mr Farage how much he has enjoyed his repeated meetings with the royal family.

"I got to meet the Queen for the second time and the first time everything was so perfect," he said.

"we got along so well and I was supposed to be there for 16.3 minutes, you know I kid when I say that, but like 15 or 16 minutes everything was so precise and I was there for an hour.

"There reason I was there was because we both had a great time, she wanted me to stay and I wanted to stay, the First Lady was with us and we had a great conversation probably for an hour."

Mr Trump refuted press claims that he had been "rude" during his meetings with the Queen.

He said: "The press said: 'He was there he was extremely rude to the Queen". I would have been rude if I left, If I said I have to leave now!

"People commented on it because in that great gala that we had we sat next to each other and she was smiling and having a good time and I was smiling and having a good time.

"It was really an incredible evening. I was told that she enjoyed it and I can tell you that I enjoyed it."

During the half-hour interview with Mr Farage, Mr Trump said Her Majesty was a "great, great" woman.

"I say that very seldom," he added.

"I don't say it very often I must say she really is outstanding."

He also heaped praise on The Prince of Wales, saying: "Prince Charles, so good, so good. He loves the environment he loves your country so much. We had a great time we will get together. Really special people."
