Oscar nominations avoid 'all-white' storm of Baftas... just

The 92nd annual Academy Awards have been announced with Joker leading the pack with 11 nods, with predominantly male and white film industry figures being at the fore in many categories.
Only one black person made it into an acting category and just one non-white director was selected for the best director list. Fans were upset that Greta Gerwig was snubbed for Best Director for Little Women.
British actress and singer Cynthia Erivo was the only BAME actor in the field, after being selected in the best supporting actress category for her role in Harriet.

Cynthia Erivo plays slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman in the film directed by Kasi Lemmons.
South Korean director Bong Joon-ho made it into the best director category for his comedy thriller Parasite.
No women were selected in the best director category - a fact noted by presenter Issa Rae who in her announcement said: "Congratulations to those men".
There were hopes that Ladybird director Greta Gerwig would make the cut - but she was not nominated for Best Director for Little Women, provoking outrage on Twitter.
The nominations for Best Director were Martin Scorsese for "The Irishman", Quentin Tarantino for "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", Bong Joon-ho for "Parasite", Sam Mendes for "1917" and Todd Phillips for "Joker".

Greta Gerwig's Little Women was however nominated for the categories of Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay.
Joker is leading this year with 11 nominations (the same number Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King were all nominated for) whilst The Irishman, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are all following close behind with 10.

The Bafta nominations were recently criticised for a lack of representation of people of colour and women in the nominations, with the hastag #BAFTASsowhite storming social media after the ceremony.
BAFTA bosses acknowledged the "infuriating" and "disappointing" lack of diversity in the some of the category shortlists.

The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite was also coined five years ago to criticise the lack of diversity in Hollywood.
The Oscars awards ceremony will air on February 9.

The nominees for the best supporting actress Oscar are Kathy Bates for Richard Jewell, Laura Dern for Marriage Story, Scarlett Johansson for Jojo Rabbit, Florence Pugh for Little Women, Margot Robbie for Bombshell.
