An Australian teen has been accused of deliberately mowing down 20 kangaroos in the space of an hour by running them over.

The alleged killing spree was reported to New South Wales Police who were called to Tura Beach, around 220 miles from Sydney, to reports of dead animals in the road.

It is thought the 19-year-old man hit the animals between 10.30pm and 11.30pm on Saturday.

Police claim the kangaroos were hit by a utility vehicle being driven by the teen, who was arrested on Tuesday.

He has been charged with torture and causing the death of animals.

Inspector Peter Volf said: "We take incidents such as these very seriously and anyone who engages in activities such as these will face the full brunt of the law."

The man has been granted conditional bail to appear before Bega Local Court on November 26.
